In a startling turn of events, the world-famous British conductor, Jan Latham-Koenig, finds himself entangled in a legal battle as he faces charges related to child sexual offences, according to the latest statement from London’s Metropolitan Police.
Jan Latham-Koenig, renowned for being the first British-born conductor to take on the role of artistic director at a Russian opera company, had received recognition for his contributions to music and UK-Russia cultural relations. In 2020, he was honored with the Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
The shocking incident unfolded when Latham-Koenig, 70, was apprehended at London Victoria Train Station on Wednesday, January 10. The Metropolitan Police, in their official statement, disclosed that he was charged the following day with offenses involving arranging/facilitating a child sexual offence and engaging in sexual communication with a child.

The Novaya Opera, conceived by the former Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov, aimed to be an opera accessible to the masses, offering an alternative to the more exclusive Bolshoi. After a period of uncertainty following the death of its founding director Yevgeny Kolobov in 2003, the opera house found new vigor under Latham-Koenig’s leadership.
